This solo exhibition is from 5 May to 5 June at Chan Hampe Galleries.
This is quite different from Simon's previous works, with different colour palettes and textures so it's refreshing and exciting to see him trying new things. They're portraits, but not in the traditional sense. Faces without faces if you like. In addition to the portraits, some of the pieces have gradient colour backgrounds - I don't know why, but they're just lovely to look at. I can't help but stop to look at each piece and then look even more closely at each little slab of paint placed onto the canvas by the palette knife.
Instead of one favourite, I have a few: About a Boy (not surprised that it sold), Without a Soul the Body is Dust (soothing palette, with dark matte background to contrast with the textured portrait), All my Senses Come to Life (a small piece with what to me is a very intense side profile), and An Ordinary Boy (a piece that says so much about the colour palette in the general body of work).
If you've seen Simon Ng's earlier works, you must catch this exhibition.
