Art Central Hong Kong 2017

Art Central took place in Hong Kong 21-25 March 2017, at Central Harborfront (next to the observation wheel).

Loads to see, especially from Japanese, Korean and Chinese artists. A handful of pieces have been shown in Singapore before. A smattering of Singapore galleries were there too.

Don't want to cause lags in the loading of this page, so I'm showing only a few pieces that caught my eye. I didn't get the names of all the pieces and the artists though - the crowds made it difficult to photograph the details.

Worth going? Yes. If you go to Hong Kong during this time, go for all the art fairs if you can, so you can see the diversity of what's going on. You won't be able to help comparing this with Art Basel, but they're two different experiences I say. Hong Kong weather is cool in March  - low to mid twenties (celcius), so you only need a long-sleeved top in the day time, with a sweater or cardigan for the evenings when you go outdoors (which won't be for very long).

at a closer look, this piece is made of dollar notes

Art Basel Hong Kong 2017

Art Basel HK took place at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre from 21-25 March.

Big range of galleries and artists from all over, a lot of buzz right up to the last day, and public enthusiasm on the public days will keep your adrenaline going.

The fair stretched across two floors, so set aside at least two days if you really want to explore and fully savour the pieces that catch your attention. Have a big breakfast and lunch before you start, because once you're in the fair, you will feel reluctant to leave when it's dinner time.

I took so many pictures but will have to be selective here otherwise the page will take forever to load.

A must-visit.

Close up of the piece above. I was strangely attracted to these OCD pieces.

Chan+Hori Contemporary - Opening exhibition

Chan+Hori Contemporary had their opening/maiden exhibition at Gillman barracks on the 9th of March 2017.

It was a double bill feature of two shows- Joo Choon Lin and Muhammad Izdi.

Interesting to see where their new direction takes them, because here at 75grams, Chan Hampe was amongst our favourite galleries.

After Image - Various artists

This exhibition was held from 17th February till 4th March 2017 over at Ipreciation.

It features: Jon Chan, Khairulddin Wahab, Hilmi Johandi, Kenichiro Fukumoto and Allan Balisi.

Jon Chan is definitely improving. He painted quite a few pieces this time and dealt with the theme of migrant workers and spaces. His painterly skills have definitely improved and he is passionate about painting and the technical aspect of it. Really like this set of paintings.

Khairulddin Wahab is also some one to watch. Good painter, but still a bit raw. Subject matter which he is dealing with - images and photos - is interesting but not captivating. Need to see where he goes and whether he stays about. 1st time he popped up on our radar.

Hilmi Johandi is one of our favourite artists at 75grams, really like his works. However, this series seems to be a transition to me. He is trying to move away from his cinematic frames of reading his paintings to move to one that is dynamic where the viewer is supposed to feel the flow in the painting. Not easy to achieve, but if executed well, it will be the bomb. Also don't quite like the colour palette which he chose. The colours don't sit well. And if intentional, the non-complementary effect wasn't put to good use. But happy that he is striving for progress and improvement.

Points for collectors: Jon Chan - buy rating. Hilmi always a buy rating, but maybe not this set. Khairulddin is almost a buy but need to see some commitment to his art practice to justify the buy.

'Malti - various artists

This exhibition is held from 13th February till 3rd March 2017 over at One East Asia Art Space.

It features the artists Christopherson Ho, Jaime Tan, Kyung Sun Jun, Lam Yau Sum, Ong Li Jie, Martha Chaudhry, Nandita Mukand and Leow Wei Li.

The works were interesting for these young artists. But I really like Nandita's works. It is really an improvement and really something different. She would be really interesting to follow and she is definitely passionate about her art.

Leow Weili did some more of the works she had been working on. Nice works.

Points for collectors: Nandita and Leow Weili are given a buy rating. Unable to give fair assessments  to the rest. Martha Chaudhry's works are interesting too, have to see what more she does.
