For this weekend,

Stephanie Burt's artist talk at Yeo Workshop on Saturday at 2pm. Followed by

Next week

Yup. That's that for now.

The Tide is Our Guide - Ripple Root

This exhibition is held from 22nd September to 15th October 2016 over at the FishTank at Ming Arcade.

This show will be followed up with a show in London at Hundred Years Gallery where they will show more works.

The complementary pair of artists have done a good job again. Their work has improved and visually/perceptually the works are good. They are still using their bright colours and the works are a bit Matisse-like? (nothing wrong with that)

Please catch the show if you can but the rest of exhibition is by appointment only. And I think they are often there on Saturdays.

Points for collectors: Buy rating for them. Good artists. Featured in Today online. Great price points too. Not really in the mainstream gallery system. But they are passionate and hardworking. And really that's what's important. Without drive about their craft and their end products, artists will usually fade away. Eventually they will get there. I am very sure.

We will meet - Alvin Ong

This exhibition is on from 15th September till 16th October 2016 at ChanHampe Galleries.

Went to catch the show recently. Took a while and stared at the art. Couldn't decide if I like it or not.
So after sitting on it for a while I am ready to write about it.

I think the entire body of work is a reflection of him trying too hard. In trying to depict energy, hallucinations and memories, he seems to be focusing so much on the colours that he forgets about the structure and flow of the work. And the bold colours put stops to the flow of the paintings and some paintings lose their dynamism. Can appreciate that he is trying to break out of his figurative mould and not just using dripping techniques to achieve that.

Just need to continue painting and keep working hard to improve and find out his artistic direction.

Points for collectors: Alvin is a slight buy rating. But this series is not. He has sold quite a lot from this series as he is reasonably priced. (Well done!) His portraits are excellent maybe because of the simpler structure, then again it is not easy to be a master portrait painter or still life master (Ala Chardin).

O dear what can the matter be - Stephanie Burt

This is at Yeo Workshop until 23 Oct, and it's a real eye-opener. If you saw the Stephanie Burt piece at Mizuma, which was part of the Liminal State exhibition, you MUST check this out too. Loved the materials, colours, the tear-out book, and the overall concept.

Buy rating: yup, buy.

In Light of the Ephemeral Silence - Eric Chan

This exhibition is held from 16th September to 23rd October 2016 at FOST Gallery at Gillman Barracks.

This series is brilliant. You can tell that Eric really worked hard on this series. Pizza Queen and I really loved what he did here. Can tell the evolution from InDefinite Defiance and that he has worked hard and polished up what he did there. Really love this body of work and the general feedback is very positive.

You should catch the show. Think there will be an artist talk on 1st October 2016.

Points for collectors: Eric is a strong buy. This series is excellent. Kudos to Stephanie too.

Friday 16 September 2016

Turn Loose the Mermaids - Jeremy Sharma, Luke Heng and Warren Khong

This exhibition is on from 16th September to 1st October 2016 at Ipreciation.

Luke presented works of metal which has to do about the frame, and the image.

Warren Khong presented more of his back painted white faced works. Similar concept to what he showed at Sundaram Tagore and at his MFA show. In addition to that, he showed a white painted wall and some plinths.

Jeremy Sharma presented his conceptual works of pictures of chess matches. Styrofoam 'pies' which has to do with sound. And also a video and a light work.

Points for Collector: Luke Heng is a strong buy. These works are excellent. Warren Khong is a neutral to buy rating. The works of back reflection of the colours are good. But haven't seen enough of what else he can do to give a accurate assessment. Jeremy Sharma has good credentials so would give him a buy rating. But I don't quite click with his conceptual works to buy it myself if I could.

Exhibitions in September

Yeo workshop just opened Stephanie Burt on Friday, will write about that soon.

15th September is a hot date, 3 shows are opening on the same day.

1. Turn Loose the Mermaids: Ipreciation - featuring Warren Khong, Jeremy Sharma and Luke Heng.

2. In Light Of The Ephemeral Silence: Fost Gallery - Eric Chan

3. We Will Meet: Chan Hampe Galleries - Alvin Ong

Hmmm.... have to split into 3 parts to cover all 3 shows because the galleries are all over the place.

Which would you attend? or would you do the crazy run around to catch all 3?
