Faris Nakamura - The Camouflaged Man: Invisibility and Mimicry

This exhibition was held from 24th to 27th January 2019 at Richard Koh Fine Arts' booth at SEA Focus.

We have been following Faris from the VADA exhibtion to the AAF young talent programme winner's exhibition.

His works were interesting; dealing with architectural shapes and the relationship with the world and himself. Two works in this series dealt with himself and expectations of himself or society on a person, namely the Stand this way and Sit this way pieces.

Points for collectors: Buy rating for Faris. Decent prices still. We found the Stand this way and Sit this way pieces refreshing. An interesting way to deal with this subject which a lot of artists try to deal with. The room/ architectural works are more commonly used. Interesting work but needs more to stand out. But his skill is improving too as the works are definitely more refined.

SEA FOCUS

This inaugural exhibition was held from 24th to 27th January 2019 at Gillman Barracks in case Art Stage didn't materialise whch was the case.

Anyway the following are some pictures of works which were shown at SEA Focus.

Supper Club - Alvin Ong

This exhibition was from 23rd January to 24th February 2019 at Yavuz Gallery over at Gillman Barracks.

This time Alvin has arrived. From the last solo show at Chan Hampe a few years ago which wasn't that good yet, then onto the European inspired works at Taksu and with Yavuz at the Millenia Walk AGAS show where improvement was shown and now onto these brilliant works.

We at 75GOP love the works. Some might have issues with the colour palette, the certain ways he deals with subject and the garish works. And we agree that the garishness could have been more subtle as his technical skill doesn't need to be in your face to make the work stand out.

Points for collectors: Buy rating. I think he sold out most works. Now that he has arrived, hope he continues moving to the next destination.

In random order - Kray Chen, Heman Chong, Grace Tan and Syagini Ratna Wulan

This exhibition was held from 23rd January to 3rd March 2019 at FOST gallery over at Gillman barracks.

It features the 4 artists but we'll talk mainly about the Singapore ones.

Kray Chen showed his waiting for bird series. Two different editions this time , of which one was shown previously at Art stage by Grey projects a few years back.

Heman Chong showed a painting, book covers and his back door series.

Grace Tan showed a few installations. An interesting piece was the one with blue pigment which stopped flowing down to the lower level of the work and was left in stasis, ready to start flowing again if you give it a tap.

Point for Collectors: Heman Chong buy rating. Like his works and he's active in the art scene. The works are priced a bit on the high side but at least his work can sell at auction. Kray Chen. Buy rating. We like his humour and like his videos too. Grace Tan, buy rating too, nice sculptures/ installation. 

Print Room - Collect - Ang Song Nian, Robert Zhao, Woong Soak Teng

This exhibition is held from 11th January to 30th March 2019 over at Deck at Prinsep Street near La Salle College of the Arts.

The exhibition showed Robert Zhao's works from his With Nature and a Camera series, dealing with how nature interacts with Man and the urban landscape and how nature has adapted to it.

Ang Song Nian showed his Hanging Heavy on My Eyes series, where he documents the Haze and the Psi reading and interprets it and presents it with a range of gradated photos of different shades of gray. And I believe the photos are processed using traditional darkroom processing.

Woong Soak Teng showed Ways to tie trees, which showed pictures of tied trees.

Points for collectors: Robert Zhao has a good following and he does nice work. He is recognised by the Art Gods and is well collected. For that he gets a buy rating. But personally we are giving him a hold rating. Because we have seen a lot from him and a lot of the same. Though each series touches on different things the end result is very similar. Ang Song Nian's series is interesting and he does good work too. He gets a buy rating too. Woong Soak Teng, we don't know enough to give a fair assessment.
