Bilateral Bonds 2017 - Various artists

This exhibition is held from 24th August 2017 to 17th September 2017 at Taksu Gallery.

In the similar vein to last years show, it features artists from Singapore and Malaysia.

Three artists of interest are:

1. Allison Low - she still presented more works for her oddlings.

2. Alvin Ong - Did a large painting which was sold. Was an ok painting. Some elements were there and some elements were not. He still has to find his identity.

3. Jamie Tan - What he did was a visual field painting of squares within squares. Visually nice work, but technically not difficult. Have to wait and see how he progresses.

Points for collectors: Allison is a good artist / drawer. Can buy. Alvin Ong - still have to wait and see. He is very active now, having works being shown at Ipreciation and also with Yavuz at Sydney Contemporary. Jamie Tan - wait and see.

Void - Loi Cai Xiang

This exhibition is held from 27th July to 20th August 2017 over at Chan+Hori Contemporary at Gillman Barracks.

Have seen Loi Cai Xiang's work for a while. Was ok. But this series he did good. His painterly skills have improved. His subject matter though personal to him is still interesting enough. And he didn't go too 'over the top' by painting the animals and other stuff in his work. But the Giraffe piece did seem a bit odd. He is from the NAFA school and he next needs to work on the conceptual aspect of the works. And the works need to resonate with people and not just dealing with himself. But definitely a good artist.

Points for collectors: Strong Buy. He is passionate and paints a lot and it is reflected in his improvement. As with all young artists, we need to sit back and see where he goes from here. We at  75GOP/PATE advocate buys early in the career of the artist to support them, but there is a chance of being burnt. The other option is sit back a bit and wait a few years and decide if you really want to support the artist before going in. Both also can. 

Another note... the pieces were a bit on the expensive side for a 25 year old, but with the amount of effort and time gone into the painting I won't complain too much about it (hence the strong buy rating). The per sq cm price was more for the bigger pieces compared to the smaller pieces and thus we aren't surprised that the bigger works didn't sell.

Undertone - Yeo Tze Yang, Bess Chan and Goh Jian Hong

This exhibition was held from 7th to 22nd July 2017 over at Ipreciation at the Hard Rock Building.

The exhibition featured Yeo Tze Yang, Bess Chan and Goh Jian Hong.

Yeo Tze Yang has improved leaps and bounds and the works shown here are good. And he will receive a Strong Buy rating at the end of the post. Really like what he did this exhibition.

Bess Chan not based in Sg, not really familiar with her works. She showed some monchromatic works which were nice.

Goh Jian Hong did some paintings which weren't really impressive. Has a long way to go.

Hi all,

Have been lurking passively at the various exhibitions. It has been a relatively slow year for Art that we at 75GOP/PATE like.

Will just catch up on writing about the exhibitions which I think are worthy of a post.

Anyway, think the second half of the year should be better.
