We will meet - Alvin Ong

This exhibition is on from 15th September till 16th October 2016 at ChanHampe Galleries.

Went to catch the show recently. Took a while and stared at the art. Couldn't decide if I like it or not.
So after sitting on it for a while I am ready to write about it.

I think the entire body of work is a reflection of him trying too hard. In trying to depict energy, hallucinations and memories, he seems to be focusing so much on the colours that he forgets about the structure and flow of the work. And the bold colours put stops to the flow of the paintings and some paintings lose their dynamism. Can appreciate that he is trying to break out of his figurative mould and not just using dripping techniques to achieve that.

Just need to continue painting and keep working hard to improve and find out his artistic direction.

Points for collectors: Alvin is a slight buy rating. But this series is not. He has sold quite a lot from this series as he is reasonably priced. (Well done!) His portraits are excellent maybe because of the simpler structure, then again it is not easy to be a master portrait painter or still life master (Ala Chardin).
