Waxing, Waning - various artists

This exhibition is held from 6th to 14th January 2018 at Ion Art.

It features 22 young artists. Michelle Lim, Deborah Ong, Priscilla Tey, Berny Tan, Justin Lin, Megan Miao, Serene Ng, Michael Ee, Jennifer Ng, Aini Azidah, Rifqi Amirul, Norah Lea, Andre Wee, Rifdi Bin Rosly, Joscelin Chew, Yeo TzeQing, Che XinWei, Vimal Kumar, Zu Orzu, Lim Jun Hong, Nurshafitri Ya'akob and Nur Halimah Jasni.

Some interesting works. Some not. Very varied group of illustrators, photographers, designers, video artists, painters.....

Some of the pieces which we like:

Priscilla Tey

We really like Priscilla Tey's works. Think she is represented by an agent (a/t her website) and does book illustrations. Nice works. I think there are some prints, painting, drawings and watercolour works. Talented lady.

Priscilla Tey

Justin Lin

Justin Lin works mainly with metal. He did a show with Tay Ining (one of our favourite metal fabricator artists) at Flaneur Gallery a few years back. Interesting work. But have to see the rest of his body of works to decide. Think in this case, a good curator for the exhibition would have been useful for us to understand the works better.

Rifdi Bin Rosly

He is definitely a good photographer. The usage of lighting and the composition is great. The exposure and the saturation of the images are nicely done. However, we have seen many similar photographs of this standard. Photographers really need more to set them apart from others and have to open a gap from the recreational photographers who have the best equipment/ means.

Zu Orzu

Found this work very interesting and intriguing. Would give it a buy rating. But she needs more exposure to mainstream galleries and art collectors for us to firmly recommend our readers to go ahead and get the work.

Nur Halimah Jasni

This is a nice textured work. There is raised texture on the black area too. And has fabric flowers on it. The black textured area reminds me of the work by Warah Rashidi at Kontemporari 2017 a few weeks earlier, also at Ion Art Gallery.

Nurshafitri Ya'akob

She presented a really nice video work. Passed the 1 minute rule. This would definitely get a buy rating.

Che XinWei

She showed these ceramics on a wax base. She also showed the 2 drawers that were shown at VADA. Good ceramist and sculptor.

Rifqi Amirul

This work was on glass. Etching, enamel paint, acrylic and ink on glass. Interesting work. Given a buy rating. He has completed his DFA and is doing his BFA at LaSalle now. Think he is the same DFA batch as Leow Weili and Cassandra Koh (see the VADA posts).

Points for collectors: These are young and talented artists and not in the mainstream Fine Art system. So we are not sure of their longevity and if they will stay on the fine art route. So buy if you think the works are up to par (the works /artists featured aboved are considered up to par) and you want to support these young artists. If you are doing it for monetary/ investment purposes, please consider the pedigree and predicted longevity of the artist before going ahead.
