After Image - Various artists

This exhibition was held from 17th February till 4th March 2017 over at Ipreciation.

It features: Jon Chan, Khairulddin Wahab, Hilmi Johandi, Kenichiro Fukumoto and Allan Balisi.

Jon Chan is definitely improving. He painted quite a few pieces this time and dealt with the theme of migrant workers and spaces. His painterly skills have definitely improved and he is passionate about painting and the technical aspect of it. Really like this set of paintings.

Khairulddin Wahab is also some one to watch. Good painter, but still a bit raw. Subject matter which he is dealing with - images and photos - is interesting but not captivating. Need to see where he goes and whether he stays about. 1st time he popped up on our radar.

Hilmi Johandi is one of our favourite artists at 75grams, really like his works. However, this series seems to be a transition to me. He is trying to move away from his cinematic frames of reading his paintings to move to one that is dynamic where the viewer is supposed to feel the flow in the painting. Not easy to achieve, but if executed well, it will be the bomb. Also don't quite like the colour palette which he chose. The colours don't sit well. And if intentional, the non-complementary effect wasn't put to good use. But happy that he is striving for progress and improvement.

Points for collectors: Jon Chan - buy rating. Hilmi always a buy rating, but maybe not this set. Khairulddin is almost a buy but need to see some commitment to his art practice to justify the buy.
